Vocational Training Center

Khartoum, Sudan Completed 2006

The government of Khartoum City, in a bid to secure and absorb the influx of youngsters displaced by conflict, announced a competition for the design of Vocational Training Schools around the three cities of the capital.

Falling back on the concepts and designs used for the design of the Social Welfare City, the Architect recognized the similarities in working with a large number of displaced individuals and the requirement for effective, pragmatic design to fulfill the needs of the users. The vocational centers are composed of a number of workshops, student facilities, staff offices and sport facilities.

A challenge for the Architect was using local building materials and local expertise to design the buildings such that they could be constructed according to the standards set by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Using burnt clay bricks as an exterior as well as an interior finish, and double glazed windows, the Architect improved the environmental performance of the building. The Architect also used monolithic epoxy floors and exposed electrical installations to fulfill the standards required by the UNDP.
